The children at Widecombe Primary School enjoyed two amazing days with internationally renowned sculptor James Lake.  The school reported:

“We welcomed the sculptor James Lake into the school for two days of workshops on Wednesday and Thursday. Webburn class, and Lower Dart and Upper Dart classes, learned how to create sculptures using cardboard. James has exhibited artworks internationally and uses the medium of cardboard to create small and large-scale 3D sculptural pieces.

The school went on to explain:

James brought an amazing range of his fantastic sculptures into school and these really inspired the pupils to be ambitious with their ideas. On the first day, the Upper Dart children created 3D portraits and the next day, Lower Dart created squirrel sculptures and Webburn made bird sculptures. It was wonderful to see the pupils transform sheets of flat cardboard into detailed 3D works of art. We would like to thank James for sharing his remarkable talent and inspiring creativity.

If you have a moment, please take a look at his website HERE.It truly speaks for itself! We would also like to thank The Helen Foundation, and The Friends of Widecombe school for funding these workshops, and to Daisi (Devon Arts in Schools) for their contract management and workshop set-up know-how.

The children said:

“I really enjoyed how creative it was making a face, especially tackling the hair. My face looked funny at the end of the day. I liked how the eyes kept slipping off. It was hard to make the eyebrows look good. I also enjoyed that it was messy in a good way!”

“Thank you so much. The workshop was absolutely delightful. I never knew you could make so many things out of cardboard. I had a ton of fun making a portrait in a kind of Picasso style. The eyebrows were at the forehead and the nose was tilted!”

“I loved the idea of it all and the fact that we could make whoever we wanted. I tried to make my best friend’s face, and it went horribly wrong! We laughed together and it brought us closer to each other.”
