Key Stage 2 students at this Teignmouth Primary had a very special art day with visiting artist-tutor, Claire Harmer. Claire encouraged the young artists to tap into their imaginations to build colourful paintings that could open the door to stories revealing themselves through their freehand work. Painting skills were refined through using Claire’s wide range of brushes, with students becoming increasingly confident with mark-making and literally drawing with paint. They went on to talk about the stories emerging from their artwork, which in turn fed into related written work.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S FEEDBACK
“I've had the best day ever because of the art. Mixing colours is so satisfying. It feels so peaceful just watching the colour changing.”
“Making drawings of stories is such a good alternative to writing a normal story.”
“I am enjoy making colour by mixing paints, trying different brushes, experimenting with techniques."
“Today was very fun. The art which was shown was great and the things we did was even better. One more thing, the colours, the brushes and the paper were very nice to use.”
“The story making was 100% the best part of this wonderful morning. The effort you put in was incredible.”
“The hard bits were putting the right amount of water, but the variations of brushes to use made it easier and more experimental. The different techniques like wax and wash made it much funner.”
