Summer is always a busy time for individual workshops and it's a challenge for trustees to fit in visits to all of them!

Year 3 children at Teignmouth Primary School were treated to a whole-day painting workshop, led by the superb artist Cara Roxanne, project-managed by Daisi and funded by The Helen Foundation.

Cara skilfully guided the children through a process of collaborative learning, building on each other’s artistic ideas and creating narratives to go with their imaginative designs. They were then invited to link these ideas together to form larger stories.

The enthusiasm and sheer joy displayed by the children during the day, as they explored techniques and used their imaginations, was evident throughout.

The children said:

I really enjoyed it when I connected my artwork with Di's work because I think it was unique. The skill I learned was how to use the different paint brushes. Cara was a great teacher and I enjoyed the day.

I learned how we can make lines into a picture.

THANK YOU FOR THE DAY!

I really liked covering the entire page with paint because it was relaxing.

Sculptor James Lake led a workshop where children created low-relief portraits.  This is very tricky work, with the need to cut out and stick small pieces of cardboard to build up the portraits and the end results were impressive, each portrait clearly different from any other and giving a good deal of satisfaction to the young artists.

Pupil feedback:

Thank you so much for organizing the workshop. It was amazing! I loved it so much. I loved curling their hair and getting it finished.

These wonderful sculptures have inspired me to make more and more sculptures.

I learned that being creative can take a person very far. You inspired me to do more art in my own free time.

I didn't know you could make so much out of just cardboard and glue.

Year 6 children at Exminster Primary enjoyed a terrific workshop with the print team from Double Elephant.

The school wrote afterwards:

The children in year 6 had a fantastic time learning about screen printing, a process that was completely new to many of them. They were fully engaged throughout, developing both their creativity and practical skills under expert guidance. It was wonderful to see children's confidence grow as they experimented with techniques.  They took real pride in producing their final outcome - a wonderful collage of their own personal designs printed on a t-shirt to mark the end of their time at primary school.

Opportunities like this not only enrich the curriculum but also inspire the children to explore new artistic avenues they may not otherwise have encountered.

The children wrote afterwards:

it was really fun and I loved the satisfaction of it.  It was like a magic trick.

The T-shirt and poster will be a memory of my Y6 class.

I liked meeting Rosie and George because they were really nice and answered all my questions.

It was awesome to see MY design on a shirt, and I will keep it forever.

Using squeegees was challenging, yet enjoyable. I learned a valuable lesson to apply firm pressure for a clear print.

Helen would be really proud of this funding. After all, her aspiration was art and acting.
